Cherbourg, France craftsmen 'Guilds' were well known for their metal work and were a source of European lanterns used by the wealthy and in military garrisons. This lantern is one of the affordable patterns in steel that offered a soft glow of light through clover shaped apertures from top to bottom. The lanterns are said to have been liberated from Cherbourg during the 'Seven Years War' when British ships entered the harbor and ransacked the city & the Castle before leaving, and the lanterns ended up in England's coastal towns where they were replicated, and also with different styled vents. Ours is 10-3/4" tall with a circular base of 4". Safely handles a 7" tall candle. Has a 2" diameter hanging ring on top.
