Build or Buy: Arguments for and Against 1911 Build Kits
Jul 10th 2025
Handguns with polymer frames, like Glock pistols and the HK VP9, may be taking over large shares of the market among shooters, but there are still many of us that prefer the solid feel and classic performance of steel-framed handguns like the M1911.
We are also faced with a choice every time we want to add something to the collection: do we build or do we buy? There are full-suite 1911 build kits you can get out there that come with literally everything you need to assemble a functioning 1911 minus the pistol frame; but then again, you could just go to a local shop, fill out some paperwork, wait for the NICS check and then bring home a brand new gun.
Which one makes the best sense for you depends on what your goals are.
Why Build a 1911?
First let’s look at some conditions that might make it more favorable for you to build a 1911 with the help of a 1911 build kit, or even with parts you get piecemeal.
- When you want to customize. This is by far the most compelling reason to build a 1911 from parts or with a 1911 build kit, because the project will let you tinker with parts and make customizations along the way. Moreover, if you build with a kit, or from parts, you can customize for performance, and this is the best way to ensure that you end up with a fully customized handgun. For instance, you could add a compensator, a stronger recoil spring, or custom grips. The choice is yours.
- When you take pride of ownership in the project. Some people like to work with their hands, and get joy from the process of creating. If you’re one of those people, then you’ll likely get more from building a gun with which you can compete or carry for defense than you’d get with one you simply bought.
- If you want to learn more about firearm mechanics. It’s pretty hard to put together a functioning handgun, from the frame up, without becoming intimately familiar not just with the internals, but what they do. You’ll learn a lot about how the gun works if you build it rather than buy it.
- If you can’t find what you’re looking for in a shop. As stated, 1911 handguns and clones based on them are not as popular as they used to be, especially with other models taking up a bulk of the market. That said, if you simply can’t find the 1911 variant you’re looking for in one of your local shops, a build kit might just be the creative license you need to get what you want.
- It can be easier, too. Depending on the state you live in, you may be able to get a pistol frame blank and complete it, then assemble a functioning handgun without the need to deal with the NICS check, or with any other red tape. This of course only applies to guns made for personal use, as per ATF regulations. Also, there are many states that have circumscribed receiver and frame blanks. If you are not sure of the legality of such a project in your jurisdiction, always consult a firearm lawyer before you proceed.
The Flipside: When to Buy
Conversely, there are times when it might make more sense for you just to visit your local shop and buy a 1911 that way, or to find what you want online and have it shipped to a local FFL. Here are some of those times.
- When you aren’t mechanically savvy. Not everyone is as astute as a gunsmith, and that’s fine. Half the people in this country that have driver’s licenses probably couldn’t tell you what a spark plug is, yet they still know how to drive and some do it well. The same goes for shooting. Technical and mechanical acumen are just two prongs of the picture.
- When you don’t care much for customization. If you just want a stock 1911 or variant, there’s little reason to invest all that time in a 1911 build kit, especially if you’re going to forego the main reason for getting one in the first place.
- When you value convenience. Lastly, building doesn’t mean all that much to everyone. If it doesn’t mean too much to you, you might as well just go to your local shop and get a 1911 instead of going through all the motions of building one.
