Why a Winchester Rifle Becomes a "DP". This mark is most commonly seen on military-contract bolt-action rifles manufactured by Winchester, such as the Pattern 14 (P14) Enfield or the M1917 Enfield. A rifle was given a DP designation for several critical reasons: Structural Failure: The receiver or action body failed headspace or structural safety inspections (e.g., micro-cracks). Severe Damage: The rifle was salvaged from a fire or combat vehicle wreck, compromising the heat treatment of the steel. Outdated Spec / Substandard Parts: Early production Winchester P14 rifles occasionally suffered from parts interchangeability issues and were designated for DP right out of the gate. Obsolescence: Even if a rifle was technically functional, it may have been mechanically deactivated simply because the military needed dedicated training props and the model was being phased out.
