The Hungarian Model 48 Submachine Gun (officially designated as the 48.Minta or 48.M) is the Hungarian military's licensed, domestic production clone of the famous Soviet PPSh-41 submachine gun. Following the rise of a Soviet-backed Stalinist government in 1948, the Hungarian military overhauled its naming system and designated an entire suite of newly adopted Soviet small arms as the "48M" (including the 48M pistol, 48M carbine, and 48M rifle).
Production of the 48.M began around 1950 at the FÉG (Fegyver- és Gépgyár) facility in Budapest with extensive technical assistance from the Soviet Union. It replaced aging, complex domestic designs like the Danuvia 43M submachine gun. A slightly altered variant tailored specifically for law enforcement, known as the 54.M, was also built. The 48.M served as Hungary’s frontline submachine gun through the 1950s—seeing extensive action during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution—before being phased out as Hungary adopted Kalashnikov-pattern rifles (like the AMD-65).
