The Japanese Type 89 Knee Mortar and associated 50mm Mortars fired a half dozen different types of rounds of which the Type 91 round was a very common high explosive round and was a design modification of the standard hand grenade with an attached booster charge. U.S. Marines in the Pacific learned to respect this round as it was used in close quarters by the enemy and had a 7-8 second fuse delay. Our inert reproduction round is made of steel with a brass fuse assembly and aluminum booster charge. This Mortar round was also used as a hand grenade when needed, as a Spigot rifle grenade launcher grenade with the Arisaka Rifles, and as a Booby Trap explosive tied to stakes with trip wires.
