French/British Kynoch 1873 Chassepot
This rifle was originally made as a needle fire rifle circa 1866 and used in the Franco-Prussian War in the hands of the French from July 19, 1870 - January 28, 1871. Many in the French military pointed to the finnicky Chassepot Model 1866 as the reason for the defeat. In 1893 the French government contracted with Kynoch Gun Factory in Aston, England to convert some of these rifles to a centerfire system and thus the 1873 Chasspot was born!
Sadly, it's life as a military rifle would be short lived as the French adopted the Gras Model 1874 shortly after.
