Here’s Why a Hoppe’s Cleaning Kit Is Worth It

Jun 1st 2021

No other gun cleaning kit has as much brand equity and recognition as Hoppe’s perhaps made most famous by the famous Hoppe’s no. 9 gun bore cleaner. A Hoppe’s cleaning kit is an investment in the health and longevity of your favorite firearm, and most kits come with everything you need to keep your firearm clean and operable. Here’s what they come with, and why they’re worth every penny.

●Hoppe’s No. 9 Gun Bore Cleaner

Since 1903, Hoppe’s No. 9 Gun Bore Cleaner has been the definitive bore solvent in the firearms industry. Supposedly, Frank August Hoppe mixed nine chemicals together and settled on the formula that has since become many a shooter’s staple - not to mention an immediately recognizable, somewhat pleasant fragrance.

Soak a patch or a bore brush in Hoppe’s No. 9 and run it down your bore and the miracle solvent will remove powder and primer fouling and the corrosive agents that can cause rust if left untreated. Hoppe’s No. 9 itself will also remove rust and even metal fouling, including copper and lead fouling produced by projectiles as they travel through the bore. In a few passes, even a heavily fouled bore will shine like a mirror!

●Hoppe’s Lubricating Oil

Hoppe’s Lubricating Oil is as effective at keeping a firearm’s works in smooth working condition as Hoppe’s No. 9 is at removing the bad stuff. The trick is to bring the firearm back to a squeaky clean condition, remove any remaining dust or particulate matter from the finish, being sure to wipe away all solvent, before sparingly applying the lubricant to moving parts along the action bars, bolt, bolt carrier or elsewhere. You can even apply a small coating of Hoppe’s lubricating oil to non-working parts and metal finishes to seal out moisture and prevent corrosion.

Just be sure to wipe away excess oil, as it is sticky and can act like a magnet to attract dust, dirt, sand and other harmful particulate matter.

●A Bore Cleaning Rod

A Hoppe’s cleaning kit will also come with a cleaning rod that is sized appropriately and contains any adapters necessary to clean your pistol, rifle or shotgun. It’s important to be aware of what you’re purchasing because not all cleaning rods are compatible with all jags and brushes. For example, the thread sizes vary between most rifle and shotgun cleaning brushes and attachments.

A kit is also convenient because you can usually collapse down the cleaning rods that come with these kits and carry them with you when you’re traveling.

●Patches

Most cleaning kits will also come with cotton patches, which are ideal for soaking in Hoppe’s No. 9 and then being used to swab out a bore. When you’re using cotton patches to clean out your bore, run fresh patches through the barrel until they come out as white as they went in!

●Caliber-Specific Cleaning Accessories

Finally, most Hoppe’s cleaning kits come with caliber specific cleaning accessories like brushes, jags and mops that you’ll need to get the bore of the firearm back to pristine condition. Bore brushes are ideal, especially when used alongside a powerful solvent, to scrub out fouling from the grooves in the rifling, and mops can be used to coerce stubborn residue out of the bore. Naturally, you need the proper size attachments for cleaning your firearm - you can’t effectively clean the bore of a 12 gauge with a brush intended for a .270!

That’s what you’ll get with a Hoppe’s firearm cleaning kit. Now, let’s take a look at why a cleaning kit is worth the little it costs!

-Bundling saves you money

You can buy all of your cleaning accessories piecemeal, and in some cases, you may want to, but the more you can knock out with a single purchase, the better. Buying a kit that will contain all of, or at least most, of the necessary accessories, will save you time and money.

-It comes with everything you need and is convenient

Secondly, a cleaning kit that has everything bundled together is highly convenient. Some firearms (like black powder rifles) need special solvents or tools to adjust their parts or break them down, or even special angled brushes to provide a thorough cleaning, but for the most part, a Hoppe’s cleaning kit has all of the general accessories you’ll need to keep most popular rifles, shotguns and pistols clean.
