9mm Largo Ammo for Sale: What You Need to Know

Jul 17th 2026

The name is unfortunately very similar to 9mm Luger, another 9mm cartridge, but make no mistake, these two are not the same. Just like 7.62x51mm NATO and 7.62x39 Soviet, they are the same caliber but not the same cartridge and the chambering is not the same.

So, with no further ado, let’s dive into the differences between these cartridges as well as some more about 9mm Largo.

9mm Largo Ammo for Sale Is Not 9mm Luger

First, if you are familiar, you know that if you look at a 9mm Largo cartridge next to a 9mm Luger cartridge, the former is significantly larger than the latter, and you can tell at a glance that they are not the same. So it’s not a situation like 5.56 and .223 where the dimensions are effectively identical and you can’t tell the difference.

The 9mm Largo is a larger, older cartridge than 9mm Luger, and was developed in 1903 for the Bergmann-Bayard pistol, and which was adopted by a few European militaries, wherein it saw widespread use before it was eventually replaced at the end of the last century by the 9mm Luger cartridge.

They are both rimless tapered cartridges, and they both fire bullets of the same caliber (diameter) at 9.02mm. However, the 9mm Largo is 9x23mm, and the 9mm Luger is 9x19mm; also, the 9mm Luger generally produces muzzle velocities around 1100 FPS whereas the 9mm Largo produces muzzle velocities around 1200 FPS or more.

In addition to this, the larger case length of the 9mm Largo means that it can carry a larger propellant charge. This, paired with the fact that it is typically loaded with heavier bullets means that it produces more stopping power as well, generally around 30%, but subject to other factors, such as bullet weight, powder charge, and more.

About This Cartridge

As stated, the 9mm Largo, also known as the 9x23mm, is a longer, larger cartridge than the 9mm Luger despite the fact that the calibers are the same.

It produces more recoil as well as more stopping power as a result of the casing’s ability to hold a larger propellant charge. This means that it can in certain situations have a slight edge in terms of power.

That said, it is important to note that these cartridges are not interchangeable as a result of the different cartridge dimensions and load data.

The 9mm Largo was fairly uncommon for a while but it is starting to make a comeback in certain circles for two important reasons. It is more powerful than the 9mm Luger, which means it has an edge in defensive engagements as well as for longer-range pistol shooting, and it can also be gotten at more competitive prices, in some cases (but not always), than 9mm Luger.

What Guns Have Been Chambered in 9mm Largo?

Over the years, many pistol platforms have been chambered in 9mm Largo. The original was the Bergmann-Bayard pistol that was adopted by the Spanish military, but other guns that have the same chambering include (but are not limited to):

  • Bergmann-Mars
  • VMP Erma SMG
  • Astra-Unceta Y Sia SA
  • Astra A-80
  • CETME C2 SMG
  • Isard Pistol
  • And several Star Bonifacio Echeverria model pistols

What Types of 9mm Largo Ammo for Sale Are There?

Like 9mm Luger, many different types of 9mm Largo ammo are available. Among the more common types are:

  • Full metal jacket: Also known as FMJ, full metal jacket is a low-cost type of 9mm Largo ammo that is ideal for high-volume target shooting and competition. It is consistent, accurate, and designed for optimal stability, accuracy and penetration. It is not however effective for defensive applications but it does not dump its energy efficiently and is likely to overpenetrate.
  • Total metal jacket: Also known as TMJ, total metal jacket is a little more expensive than FMJ, but it can be slightly more consistent and the lead base will be enclosed, which will produce less lead fouling in a bore.
  • Jacketed hollow point: Also known as JHP, jacketed hollow point ammo is designed to efficiently dump its energy on contact with a soft target, which gives it the greatest stopping power among the three types of ammo covered here. Therefore, JHP 9mm Largo ammo for sale is the prime choice among those who keep or carry 9mm Largo pistols for defensive applications.
