The Rebellious Stripes consisted of 9 vertical red and white stripes to denote the nine colonies (Georgia, New Hampshire, North Carolina did not attend) who attended a 1765 congress in NY motioned by distinguished lawyer and orator James Otis. The flag became known as the "Rebellious Stripes" and was a symbol of the congress' protest against British taxation. The flag was eventually banned by the King of England, causing the Sons of Liberty to create the more widely known 13-horizontal stripe flag.
