Luftwaffe 'bomber' crews suffered from Flak casualties at an alarming rate and  several steel helmet shells were produced to safeguard their 'noggins' once command realized that the flight crews, for lack of anything substantial, just put their M1935 infantry helmets over their leather flight helmet. Several iterations were produced to correct this issue in protective head gear starting in 1940. By the invasion of Russia, the necessity for improved head gear to combat flak shrapnel was acute.  The M1935 helmet modified to accept headphones became a staple on the Eastern Front. Reminiscent of the WW1 Stahlhelm for cavalry and radio operators, this design with ear cutouts became standard where they could be issued in the converted Model 1935 or M1940 helmets. Our version is the steel 1935 pattern with rolled edge, leather liner with chinstrap, and in size Large (U.S. 7-1/2"). Helmet comes with a late' war Luftwaffe decal that was normally put on the front brow of this airman's helmet. The decal is a water transfer decal for you to put on if you choose to.

The only thing wrong with this item is the color of the paint. It is one of the best made helmet reproductions I've seen recently.
