WW1 trench warfare consisted of close quarter combat and left swords in the dust of history to some degree. For the French, some enterprising officers decided on converting swords into trench knives and such was the case with a 'Lt.Col. Coutrot', who proposed a designed knife for close combat that used the front end of an officer's sword. Coutrot' knives were issued in many variations, but all of them were very favorable to combat in the trenches. Our knife is of a 1916 design, newly manufactured with a double edged blade in steel (8Cr14MoV) which is carefully honed for sharpness and strength in holding an edge. An excellent defensive weapon. Blade is 6.5" long and overall length is 12". This knife comes with a steel, period scabbard.
