The Mauser 98k, also known as the Karabiner 98k (Kurz, German for short, which may be a reference to the abbreviated length of the carbine) is a rifle platform that was developed around the immensely popular Mauser M98 action. The M98 action, prized for its reliable and smooth operation, was originally fitted with a straight bolt handle that was later replaced with a curved bolt that improved cycling time and cleared the sight picture during periods of high rates of fire. This action was widely implemented by the German Army into sniper rifles and so-called assault rifles that saw use by German forces throughout World War II.
